Since first entering a recording studio some 15 years ago, singer and guitarist Erja Lyytinen has become a bona fide star in her homeland and a fixture on the international music scene. “The Finnish slide goddess” (The Blues Magazine) successfully blends blues with styles like jazz, pop, soul and rock into a sound all her own. After being voted the #1 international solo artist by Blues Matters and “Artist of the Year” at the Finnish Blues Awards in 2015, she now releases her new studio record Stolen Hearts. With the help of legendary producer Chris Kimsey (Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin,…) she made a record that reveals a new facet of her artistic persona. In autumn 2017, she also took part in the Finnish TV-show Tähdet, Tähdet (Stars, Stars) and sang for half a million people each week. The icing on the cake came in late November 2017 when it was announced that Erja won a European Blues Award for “Best Guitarist”.

Erja Lyytinen has graduated from Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and has a Master’s degree in Music. She wrote her master thesis about the slide guitarist Son House and the characters of Delta blues.

THE WORKSHOP will go through basic blues scales and how to incorporate them into the solos.
We will also go through the main blues styles, such as rhythm ’n’ and blues, funk blues, shuffle styles and so on. While playing the guitar, the technique plays an important role, but while playing blues guitar the emotion and feel is essential. We will be going through aspects how to reach that feel.

The workshop will have a section for slide guitar. How to handle slide, muting the strings and how to get the perfect pitch with a slide. We will learn about the open tunings and about the sound of the open tunings, which tunings to use and when.

We will be also looking at how to update your blues guitar playing to 21st century by using effect pedals and including them to your playing.

We will be listening to examples from blues guitarists around the world and also be playing songs involving each topic, so the workshop will be a lot of fun and you will get to know your blues guitar better!
